Ordinance Details
Missing From Story
To the Editor:
It was with great interest â and then great frustration â that I read âGun Ordinance Draws Fireâ by John Voket, looking for any specific details about the proposed ordinance. I was previously unaware of this proposed ordinance, and after reading your article, I am still largely ignorant of its provisions.
In vain I reread the article, then searched through the last two issues of The Bee looking for any prior mention of this proposal. As a responsible gun owner, target shooter, and hunter â as well as a parent, history teacher, and town resident â I am keenly interested in the ongoing debate over how to maintain public safety while preserving individual liberties. Perhaps you had already published the details in an earlier article and I simply missed it; still, a quick review of the ordinanceâs provisions here would seem appropriate given the public interest reported in the article. This has served to remind me that freedom of the press is enshrined in our Bill of Rights precisely because democracy depends on a well-informed electorate.
Respectfully,

(Editorâs Note: The main provisions of the proposed ordinance were described in The Beeâs initial report, âPolice Panel Recommends Restrictions on Target Shooting,â published on June 8. A draft of the ordinance also appears in The Beeâs online âSource Filesâ in the Legislative Council folder.)Â Â Â Â Â Â
