Center Street in Sandy Hook will remain closed for hours after a tractor-trailer truck went off I-84 West in that area around 8 am.

A tandem 18-wheeler went off the interstate bridge and crashed onto the southern shoulder of Center Street. The cab and first trailer of the tandem rig went off the highway, but the second trailer remained on the bridge above Center Street.

The driver was apparently uninjured. Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps sent a crew to the scene to check the man, who was walked around and speaking with police officers. He was not initially transported to the hospital.

CT State Police, Newtown Police, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, and DEEP all responded to the crash. Firefighters put down booms, soaker pads, and Speedi-Dri to contain fluids leaking from the truck.

Traffic was detoured around the area.

Hilario’s sent at least one heavy duty wrecker to the crash.

Local residents were gathering on both sides of the crash, taking photos and talking among themselves. At least one woman was on her phone with DEEP, sharing concerns about the leaking diesel and its proximity to the waterside neighborhood.

The truck landed approximately 186 yards west of the edge of Lake Zoar. There is at least one storm drain near the truck, which firefighters also surrounded with Speedi-Dri and soaker pads.

No additional details were available at this time.
