Buick Championship

Comedian Bill Murray – a 2004 Golden Globe winner best remembered for his role as Carl the greenskeeper in Caddyshack – will return to the St. Paul/Traveler’s Celebrity Pro-Am at the 2004 Buick Championship next week at the TPC at River Highlands in Cromwell.

“We put the full court press on with Bill this year,” said tournament director Dan Baker. “Between Chris (Berman) and Scott (Simpson), Bill decided he wanted to see the back nine because he was only able to play the front last year in our rain-shortened pro-am. We could not ask for a better celebrity to promote the tournament.”

Musical artists Michael Bolton and Aaron Lewis (of Staind) have also committed to play in the pro-am, along with former New England Patriots quarterback Steve Grogan.

LPGA star Suzy Whalley had originally committed to participate in the pro-am, but she will be competing in the Betsy King LPGA Classic in Pennsylvania next week.

“Aaron Lewis and Staind have sol more than eight million albums worldwide,” said Baker. “Aaron is an avid golfer who grew up in Longmeadow, Massachusetts playing the game. We thought he would be a great addition for our young fans, who turn out in the thousands to see Staind play music. So we hope to see them turn out to see Aaron play golf.”

As far as the tournament goes, the list of committed players includes Billy Andrade, Woody Austin, Briny Baird, Notah Begay III, Mark Brooks, Jonathan Byrd, Tom Byrum, Mark Calcavecchia, KJ Choi, Daniel Chopra, Stewart Cink, Robert Damron, Chris DiMarco, Trevor Dodds, Brad Faxon, Dan Forsman, David Frost, Fred Funk, Bill Haas, JJ Henry, Tim Herron, Scott Hoch, Lee Janzen, Jerry Kelly, Matt Kuchar, Hank Kuehne, Peter Lonard, Corey Pavin, Kenny Perry, Tim Petrovic, Carl Pettersson, Nick Price, Brett Quigley, Justin Rose, Gene Sauers, Joey Sindelar, Heath Slocum, Jeff Sluman, Hal Sutton and Casey Wittenberg.
