Newtown’s Senior League baseball team members have played their last game together before most players depart for their freshman year in college at the end of the month.

The team delivered one of their best season records at 17-7. Newtown then participated in the annual Naugatuck 18U tournament, playing seven games in seven nights and finishing in second place.

The players, most from longtime Newtown families, have played fall, spring, and summer ball together for the better part of the last 12 years, starting with T-ball. Throughout those years, a few of the boys chose to play for clubs/organizations outside of Newtown, but they reunited this summer for a final season.

The team has also played for the same coaches over the years — Charlie Sortino, Kevin DeBartolomeo, and Dave O’Sullivan — which has fostered continuity in their development as well as a special bond among players and coaches.

“It was bittersweet to see these boys play their final season before they embark on their college journey,” Coach Sortino said. “They’ve developed as solid players over the years and their performance on the field this summer reflected both their individual growth and talent as a longstanding team. It was a lot of fun to see these friends come together one last time.”

Team members include Lyle Petrellese, Grant Baker, Nick Sortino, Dan DeBartolomeo, Trevor Jacozzi, Miller Tetreault, Matt Sortino, Grayson DeFelice, Zach Kugler, Andrew Kugler, Sean O’Sullivan, Evan Casagrande, Andrew McMahon, Noah DiNallo, and RJ Eller.
