Wants Curbside Recycling Restored

To The Editor:

I was not surprised to read in last week’s Bee that other families are as upset as I am about the cancellation of curbside recycling in Newtown. I wrote a letter directly to Mr. Capeci on this subject and received a nice note back about the cost savings. That is fine, but the decision to eliminate this major useful service should have been voted on by residents. I am guessing that most families want to keep curbside recycling to avoid even longer lines at the transfer station on Saturday. Some will choose to put their recycling into their garbage and just pay a little more. Worse yet, with the new fees some will dump their garbage and recyclables along the road or in out of the way spots around town.

I read there was a survey and only 40% of homes used curbside recycling. I only have my own street to go by, but only one household out of 22 did not have their bins out this past Tuesday night.

Please consider restoring this service. It will be a huge inconvenience to bring recyclables to the transfer station, and what are people living alone or with disabilities who do not drive supposed to do? This decision is bad for Newtown, and we should stay the course of recycling that was begun in 1991.
