Teaching Empathy:
Safe Schools Workshop
WASHINGTON â Author David A. Levine, the creator of the Howard Gray anti-bullying video and in-service trainer/student workshop leader, will lead a special âbook releaseâ workshop to introduce his newest publication, Teaching Empathy: Creating Safe Schools. Mr Levineâs new manual is a practical, research-based âhow-toâ program, written after hundreds of student learning sessions on understanding differences and the need for friendship and belonging.
The introductory workshop is being sponsored by and held at the Institute for American Indian Studies, at 38 Curtis Road, on Saturday, September 16.
The workshop will deal with some of the questions that concern educators in many situations today, including how to prevent an atmosphere of intolerance and the associated emotional pain and hopelessness that comes with it. Positive replacement behaviors and choices will be suggested.
David A. Levine, a teacher, author, musician, and prevention specialist, has served in many career capacities which qualify him as a workshop facilitator in this field. He was the chief trainer for the US Department of Educationâs Safe and Drug Free School program, has taught elementary/middle school, and has written four books and numerous articles on social skills development, peer programming, social responsibility, and tolerance education.

His goal is to provide relevant, practical, and enjoyable learning experiences that validate all people, helping to create a safe and supportive setting in which to live and learn.
The workshop will run from 1 to 3 pm. The fee is $25 per person, and Connecticut educators may earn 0.2 CEUs by attending. There is limited enrollment, so reservations are required. Call 860/868-0518 extension 3 for details or to make reservations.
