A 4-year-old Newtown resident learning about philanthropy recently raised $300 for one of the town’s nonprofit organizations dedicated to healing following the events of 12/14.

While Vienna Carpenter is too young to understand what happened that December morning seven-and-a-half years ago, her mother, Amanda, has long been a supporter of the Resiliency Center of Newtown (RCN).

With help, Vienna opened a lemonade stand outside her home on August 1. Customers were invited to purchase lemonade — homemade lemonade, from scratch — lemonade cookies, and/or cake pops.

In just about an hour, donations totaled $214, according to Amanda. A matching donation raised the final amount for RCN to $300.

“The stand was very busy,” she added. Neighbors were quick to support the project, and one uncle drove in from New Jersey to support his niece’s efforts.

When she and her daughter were at RCN last week to make the donation, Amanda explained that “‘charity’ was the word of that week,” which led to the decision to host the fundraiser.

When asked why she decided to donate the money to RCN, Vienna quietly said she wanted “to help people who have boo-boos in their hearts.”

With mom Amanda providing backup, Vienna Carpenter presents a donation of $300 to Resiliency Center of Newtown Client Relations and Administrative Support Specialist Beth Hegarty on August 20. Vienna raised the funds through a lemonade stand she hosted at the beginning of the month.
