Residents may have noticed a missing piece to Newtown’s famous flagpole in recent months. All pieces have been returned and the landmark has a fresh new coat of paint, all ahead of the unofficial end of summer.

On January 26, a truck operated by a Bethel resident struck the flagpole. The vibrations from the collision traveled up the pole, causing the finial to snap clean off.

After months of waiting, the finial has been replaced thanks to Dan Hern of Valley Restoration, a Torrington-based company that has done quite a bit of work on Newtown’s flagpole for decades. Not only did Hern replace the finial, he installed it and repainted the entire pole, too. The painting was done on Thursday, August 21.

As Senior Burgess and Keeper of the Flag Chris Gardner pointed out, it made sense to have the entire flagpole repainted if the finial was to also be replaced. The Borough Board of Burgesses discussed this issue at the February 11 meeting, with monthly check-ins and updates from Gardner about the progress. He hoped to have the finial replaced and pole painted by the Labor Day Parade, and now he has gotten his wish.

The missing finial and need to repaint were not the only issues the flag faced this summer, however. Somehow, the 20- by 30-foot summer flag ripped a few weeks ago. The summer flag came down and a 16- by 20-foot winter flag flew for a few days while Queen Street Cleaners repaired it. Rosa Cordova sewed the summer flag back up and it is now flying high in the sky again, ready to welcome the thousands of Labor Day Parade watchers who are expected on Monday.

Hern continues painting his way down the flagpole. The finial, or golden globe that sits at the top of the flagpole, has been replaced. Hern worked directly with Senior Burgess and Keeper of the Flag Chris Gardner to restore the flagpole to glory after a rough start to the year and a few months with parts and pieces missing.
