The work of artists Tony Woolner and Gayle Gleckler, a married couple from North Salem, N.Y., was on display at an art show opening reception on Sunday, August 26, at The Inn at Newtown.
Entitled âBoth Sides Now â Lifeâs Illusions We Recallâ¦,â the exhibition will remain on display at the inn for the next two months.
The well-attended event, at which Portuguese-themed cocktails and hors dâoeuvres were served, provided live entertainment by a combo featuring jazz singer Lisa Maxwell.
Monoprints by Mr Woolner and acrylic paintings by Ms Gleckler were arrayed in a large room at the inn which faces Main Street. Following Sundayâs opening, the artworks were to be moved into a large corridor off the innâs front reception area.
The joint art show is the coupleâs fourth collaborative exhibition.
Mr Woolnerâs monoprints and Ms Glecklerâs acrylic paintings share Portugal as their subject matter. The imagery is based on the coupleâs favorite photographs of Portugal, a country which they have visited and where Mr Woolner asked Ms Gleckler to marry him.
On their trip to Portugal, the couple visited Sintra, Obidos, Marvao, Aveiro, Evora, Santiago, Sentebal and Cascais.
Of their Portugal trip, the artists said in a statement, âThe light and color splashed all around us and danced everywhere. The bright Portugal sun cast graphic shadows artists only dream of.â
They added: âFrom the swan-necked [kelp boats] that still glide through ancient canals to the grandest of palaces, we marveled. It is our absolute pleasure to present our Portugal experience on canvas and monoprints, and share with you our total joy at discovering this amazing country.â
Mr Woolnerâs subject matter includes a cathedral, a museum, a castle, and rooftops. Ms Glecklerâs content includes a street, a bird, a port, and a stairway. The art show consists of 16 works, eight each by Mr Woolner and by Ms Gleckler.
Both artists employ bold, graphic, simplified designs which include vivid colors. The monoprints and acrylic paintings are for sale.
âBoth Sides Nowâ is the first of a series of art shows sponsored by Absolut Vodka to be held at the inn, located at 19 Main Street.
