Reminder: Road Races, Labor Day Parade Will Create

Temporary Road Closures, September 1 & 3

The 7th Annual Road Race 5K and Newtown Prevention Council Kids Run to benefit Newtown Youth & Family Services will be held on Saturday, September 1. Two days later, the 51st Annual Newtown Labor Day Parade will also cause road closures and detours for a few hours.

For the road race on Saturday, parts of Route 302 (Sugar Street) will be closed. Race organizers expect the closures to be in effect from 8 am until approximately 11 am. The course will be clearly marked and any traffic disruptions will be detoured appropriately.

The road will affect the section of Sugar Street between Elm Drive and the western end of Baldwin Road (which loops off of Sugar Street).

On Monday, September 3, the town will be holding its annual Labor Day Parade. It is important to note that the parade is starting at noon this year. The parade will necessitate the closure of all roads leading into the center of town. The specific closures are as follows:

*Route 25/Mt Pleasant Road South at Reservoir Road;

*Main Street access from Academy Lane, Currituck Road, Hanover Road, Schoolhouse Hill Road, and West Street;

*Church Hill Road, westbound, at The Boulevard;

*Route 302/Sugar Street at Elm Drive;

*Route 302/Sugar Street, north, at Elizabeth Street (the detour for Route 25/Main Street South, for northbound travelers, will be Wasserman Way); and

*Queen Street, northbound, at Elizabeth Street.

In addition, the following roads will have temporary No Parking signs erected on them and will be considered tow-away zones:

*The Boulevard, between Church Hill Road and Schoolhouse Hill Road;

*Hanover Road, between Main Street and Hall Lane;

*Elm Drive, between Route 302/Sugar Street and Hawley Road;

*Elizabeth Street, Hawley Road, and Meadow Road.

The roads will be closed at 11:45 am, and will remain closed until the end of the parade, approximately 2:15 pm.
