‘Compleat Female Stage Beauty’ To Open Soon

NEW MILFORD — On Friday, September 22, TheatreWorks New Milford will open the clever backstage comedy Compleat Female Stage Beauty by Jeffrey Hatcher for a five-week run.

The play centers on the fascinating true story of Edward Kynaston (played by Jeremiah Maestas), a renowned actor in 1660s London. Celebrated for his genius at playing female roles Kynaston’s world collapses when King Charles II (Ramsay Cole) lifts the ban on women appearing on the English stage.

Consumed by vengeance, Kynaston regards Mrs Margaret Hughes (Kara Peters), the first English “actress,” as his bitter rival and the cause for his downfall. Only when his former dresser Maria (Olivia D’Ambrosio) takes it upon herself to make him into the man he never was does Kynaston discover his true destiny.

The play was adapted into the popular 2004 movie Stage Beauty starring Claire Danes, Billy Crudup, and Rupert Everett.

Directed by Jane Farnol, the production cast will also feature numerous local actors, including Jim Lones of Newtown.

Performances will be held on Fridays and Saturdays, September 22 through October 21, at 8 pm, and on Sunday, October 8, at 2 pm. Tickets for all shows are $17.50. Call the TheatreWorks box office, 860-350-6863, for reservations.
