Excerpts To Offer Sneak Peak Of Broadway-Bound Show

Southern Comforts, starring Penny Fuller and William Biff McGuire, directed by two-time Tony Award-winning actress Judith Ivey, will begin its Broadway run at Primary Stages in New York.

Local audiences can get a sneak peak at the show before it hits the great White Way, however, when The Ridgefield Playhouse for Movies and the Performing Arts hosts one special performance on Sunday, September 10. Curtain is 7 pm. Presented by The Ridgefield Playhouse and Deep End Productions, the actors will perform excerpts from the play followed by a Q&A as well as a Meet & Greet reception with the artists.

Anna Becker, of Deep End Productions, will moderate the Q&A with Ms Ivey, Kathleen Clark (the playwright), and Primary Stage Artistic Director Andrew Leynse.

Two-time O’Neill Playwright’s Conference participant Kathleen Clark wrote this masterful journey of life, about a widow and widower who meet late in life and find their way into each other’s hearts. It is a tender and moving story, one that touches the heart and provides laughs along the way.

Penny Fuller and William Biff McGuire have each been twice Tony-nominated, Ms Fuller for Applause and The Dinner Party  while Mr McGuire received his nominations for Morning’s At Seven and The Young Man From Atlanta.

Primary Stages, founded in 1984 as a non-profit theater company, has given life to more than 80 new plays, many of them world premieres, by such writers as A.R. Gurney and Terrence McNally. Their new theater at 59E59 Theaters has increased their profile in New York while boosting their reputation as one of the premiere theaters for the development of new work.

Future offerings in The Ridgefield Playhouse’s Theater Series include a world premiere commissioned by Long Wharf Theatre, written and performed by David Cale and Dael Orlandersmith, on February 24; as well as the Solo Spotlight Series, which features Rain Pryor: Fried Chicken & Latkes, Phil Rosenthal: Everybody Loves Raymond, Life in a Marital Institution (James Braly) and The Heat is On: The Rita Hayworth Story. Series discounts are available.

For tickets to Southern Comforts ($40) and further information about the Theater Series, call the box office at 203-438-5795; tickets may also be purchased online at RidgefieldPlayhouse.org. The Playhouse is located at 80 East Ridge, parallel to Main Street.
