In the interest of public safety and the hope that everyone has a good time, The Newtown Labor Day Parade Committee has issued a few reminders ahead of Monday's big event.

The national anthem will be sung at 9:55 am. Susan Lang will sing at the Main Street flagpole, and Alex Kirkman will lead the performance at the Judges Grandstand on Queen Street.

Step-off of the parade is 10 o’clock.

The parade takes place rain or shine.

The committee strongly encourages the use of shuttle buses, which will be located at St Rose Parish parking lot, 46 Church Hill Road.

Staging begins at 7:30 am

Roads close to non-parade/through traffic at 9:30.

Porta potties and trash receptacles will be located in staging areas and throughout the parade route. Participants and spectators are asked to use those receptacles or carry out what they carry in with them. Do not leave litter on front lawns of private homes nor any other property along the parade route.

Handicapped-accessible facilities will be located at 77 Main Street (Art & Frame), 3 Main Street (former Newtown police station), and Caraluzzi’s (parking lot opposite the main Judges stand).

Fire apparatus is to stage on Mt Pleasant Road in the following order:

1. Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire and Rescue

2. Newtown Hook & Ladder

3. Hawleyville Volunteer Fire Company

4. Botsford Fire Rescue

5. Dodgingtown Volunteer Fire and Rescue

Signs were posted well in advance, including this one on Church Hill Road near The Boulevard, reminding drivers that roads in the center of town will be closed to non-parade traffic for at least three hours on Monday, September 5. The Labor Day Parade will step off from Main Street at Currituck Road at 10 o’clock that morning. —Bee Photo, Hicks
