Interstate Crash

While traveling east on Interstate 84 at about 6:35 pm on August 27, motorist Roger Mavrides, 59, of Canton, Mass., who was driving a 2010 BMW, struck the rear end of a 2005 Mercedes-Benz driven by Lauren Henson, 27, of Southbury, state police said. There were no injuries. Mavrides received an infraction for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, state police said.

SUV Hits Guardcabling

State police report that motorist Arleen Chin, 74, of Southbury was driving a 2010 Subaru Forester SUV on entering the Exit 10 on-ramp for Interstate 84 at about 9:26 am on August 24.

Chin then lost control of the Subaru and struck some guardcabling, damaging an about 130-foot section, state police aid.

Chin was transported to Danbury Hospital to be checked, state police said.

Sandy Hook Collision

At about 5:50 pm on August 19, motorist Danielle Stegeman of Stratford, who was driving a 2005 Honda Civic sedan, was driving on Jordan Hill Road and then stopped at a stop sign at its intersection with Berkshire Road before attempting to make a left turn onto that road, police said.

At that time, motorist Courtney Briggs of Derby was driving a 2012 Chevrolet Cruze sedan on Berkshire Road, police said.

The Honda then entered Berkshire Road and the two vehicles collided. There were no injuries. Police said they issued Stegeman a written warning for failure to grant the right of way.

South Main Crash

Police said that motorist Corileigh Thompson, 23, of New Milford was driving a 2014 Kia Soul SUV southward near 101 South Main Street at about 3:18 pm on August 26, when she stopped for traffic conditions and was then struck from behind by southbound motorist Addison Unangst, 84, of Brookfield, who was driving a 2015 Mercedes-Benz ML-350 SUV.

There were no injuries. Police said they issued Unangst a written warning for following too closely.

Burglary Probed

Police said this week that sometime between 10:15 am and 1:30 pm on August 15, an unknown person or persons illegally entered a house on Narragansett Trail in the area near that street’s intersection with Riverside Road.

The burglar/burglars apparently entered the house through a rear kitchen window, police said. Items inside the house were disturbed, but no items were taken in the incident, according to police.

Police are investigating the burglary and ask anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact them at the police station at 3 Main Street at 203 426-5841

Theft From Vehicle

Sometime after 10 pm on August 20, someone entered a motor vehicle that was parked in a residential driveway on Dogwood Terrace.

Items stolen from within the vehicle included cash, an electronic navigation device, and a Nokia-brand tablet computer, police report.

Police are investigating and ask anyone with knowledge of the crime to contact them at 203-426-5841.

Also, police urge that motorists who leave their vehicles unattended to remove all valuables from the vehicles and also lock all doors on the vehicles.

Parking Lot Incident

At about 7:45 am on August 21, an unoccupied black Chevrolet Tahoe SUV, which was parked near Queen Street in the parking lot for The Shops at Newtown at 5 Queen Street, received heavy damage when an unknown vehicle struck it, police report.

Based on evidence at the scene, it appears that the offending vehicle was a large white truck or a trailer, police said. Police ask any witnesses to the incident to contact them at the police station.

South Main Collision

At about 7:52 am on August 21, motorist Brian Scobin, 57, of 8 Nunnawauk Road, who was driving a 2000 Buick Century sedan on South Main Street, stopped and was waiting to make a turn into the driveway at 151 South Main Street, when the Buick was struck from behind by motorist Kendra Peck, 27, of Danbury, who was driving a 2008 Dodge Avenger sedan, police said.

There were no injuries. Peck received a written warning for following too closely, police said.

Intersection Collision

Police report a two-vehicle accident at the signalized intersection of Berkshire Road and Wasserman Way about 6:38 pm on August 23.

Motorist Recinos Bredi, 37, of Seymour, who was driving a 2013 Honda Accord sedan westward on Berkshire Road, was attempting to make a left turn onto Wasserman Way, as motorist Larry Hyde, 70, of South Yarmouth, Mass., who was driving a 2004 Ford Escape SUV eastward on Berkshire Road, attempted to drive straight through the intersection, police said.

The two vehicles collided. Bredi and Ford passenger Gretchen Hyde, 69, were transported to Danbury Hospital for possible injuries, police said.

Bredi received an infraction for failure to grant the right of way and for driving without a license, police said.

Three MV Violations

Police report that they stopped motorist Anthony Assad, 24, of 12 Little Brook Lane at an intersection of South Main Street and Pecks Lane at about 7:38 pm on August 31 to investigate.

Police said they charged Assad with misuse of marker plates, driving an unregistered vehicle, and failure to have automotive insurance. Assad was released on $500 nonsurety bail for a September 15 court appearance, according to police.

Air Conditioner

Police said that sometime between 9 pm on September 1, and 7:30 am on September 2, someone stole a gray and white 12,500-BTU air conditioner from a property at 128 Hanover Road. Police are investigating the theft and ask anyone with information on the incident to contact Officer John McCluskey at the police station at 3 Main Street, telephone 203 426-5841.

Chevy Vs Scion

On westbound Mile Hill Road, at its intersection with South Main Street, motorist William Jacobs, 30, of 17-A Botsford Hill Road, who was driving a 2002 Chevrolet pickup truck, struck the rear end of a 2005 Scion X-B SUV driven by James Roodhuyzen, 65, of 60 Schoolhouse Hill Road at about 3:41 pm on August 24, according to police.

There were no injuries. Jacobs received a written warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart, police said.

At about 11:40 am on August 26, motorcyclist Francis Spencer, 56, of Bethel who was riding a 2006 Harley-Davidson Sportster southward on Hawleyville Road, failed to stop at a red traffic signal at Hawleyville Road’s intersection with Mt Pleasant Road. The motorcycle then drove through that intersection and struck a section of flex-beam metal guardrailing along Mt Pleasant Road; no other vehicles were involved in the incident, police said. Spencer was not wearing a helmet, police said, adding he was transported to Danbury Hospital for treatment of moderately serious, but non-life-threatening injuries, including various contusions, lacerations, and puncture wounds. A hospital spokeswomen said she had no information on Spencer. Hawleyville volunteer firefighters responded to the accident scene. The incident caused travel delays in the area. Police said there was no enforcement in the incident.     
Police report that a two-vehicle accident occurred near 261 Berkshire Road (Route 34) about 4:48 pm on August 31. Motorist Emily Sousa, 20, of Bethel, who was driving a 2010 Subaru Legacy sedan westward, drove into the rear end of a westbound commercial 1999 Ford F-250 pickup truck driven by Casey Ziegelmeier, 43, of New Milford, police said. There were no injuries; Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue Company firefighters, including Archie Paloian, above, responded to the incident. The collision caused travel delays during the evening rush. Police said they issued Sousa an infraction for following too closely and for distracted driving.
