Fall Domestic Violence,

Sexual Assault Hotline Training

DANBURY — The Women’s Center of Greater Danbury is now screening volunteers or its Domestic Violence – Sexual Assault Crisis Intervention Training.

The 40-hour training dates are September 27, October 3, 9, 14, 16, 25, 29, November 4, 7, 13, and 19. Evening classes are 5:30 to 9 pm, while the Saturday sessions run from 9 am to 3 pm. Bilingual and male candidates are encouraged to apply.

This training will qualify the volunteer to do crisis intervention counseling, which is a hotline position that can be done on-site during business hours, or after business hours, from your home. This training is also a prerequisite for specialized positions such as peer counseling, court advocacy, group facilitation, and shelter advocacy. Day and evening childcare and other non-counseling positions such  as fundraising, electrical support, and writing are also available and require only a five-hour orientation.

During the last fiscal year, 75 volunteers provided 22,865 hours of support to the 16,285 adults and children served in the Greater Danbury area. Approximately 10 percent of the volunteers reside in Newtown, while the Women’s Center helped 914 people in Newtown through its various programs and services.

To become part of the solution of abuse, contact the Program Manager of Volunteer Services Melanie Danyliw, at 731-5200, extension 224. A screening interview is required.
