Geralyn Hoerauf of Diversified Project Management presented the sixth phase of the new Sandy Hook Elementary School building project before the Board of Education during its meeting on Tuesday, September 1.

“As you might recall, every time we submit a phase to the State of Connecticut, we have to have that phase of construction documents and budget approved first by the Public Building and Site Commission as the building committee then you bring them to the Board of Ed,” said Ms Hoerauf.

The Phase 6 construction documents were unanimously passed by the Public Building and Site Commission during its meeting on August 25.

Ms Hoerauf told the school board, “You may be wondering where Phase 5 is, that will be coming in November/December.”

The playground equipment “got ahead,” Ms Hoerauf explained, of the furniture package in Phase 5.

Phase 6, according to Ms Hoerauf, includes playground equipment, other outdoor equipment, and surfacing material for beneath the playground equipment.

The contract for Phase 6, Ms Hoerauf said, will be overseen by a playground equipment vendor, who is under state contract.

“So we won’t be bidding this phase,” said Ms Hoerauf. “That saves us some time and also some money.”

Ms Hoerauf said roughly $525,000 was originally allocated for the project’s playground equipment phase, but the new quote is $457,000.

With both the Public Building and Site Commission’s approval and the school board’s unanimous vote of approval on September 1, the Phase 6 documents will be submitted to the State of Connecticut Office of School Facilities.
