Classical Music, Fine Wines And Gardens Tours

Six years ago, Dr Z. Michael Taweh and his wife Jocelyn founded Kevin’s Community Center, a clinic committed to providing free health care to underinsured and uninsured residents. After a year-long effort by dedicated volunteers and with the full support of local and state government, the clinic was opened and dedicated to the memory of their son, Kevin, who had died at just age three.

On Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 7 pm, Kevin’s Community Center will celebrate its fifth year of operation, marking this milestone with an event called “Mozart, Merlot and Mums — An Exquisite Trilogy of Classical Music, Fine Wines and Garden Tours.”

Hosting the event are Newtown residents George and Shane Miller of 50 Main Street, a/k/a The Budd House. Matt DeAngelis, the owner of Yankee Liquor and Stop N Save, and store manager Steve Small will offer a taste of wines from around the world, while distributors Mike Brennan of Prestige Wine Imports and John Naim of Pro-Enterprise Wine Distribution will coordinate the selection.

Acclaimed musical conductor and Newtown resident Richard Serbagi is arranging the musical accompaniment which will include music by The Concert Society Chamber Orchestra.

Sandy Hook musician Doug Wahlberg will also be among those providing music during the fundraiser, as will Rick Baumer and Marc Huberman.

Several local restaurants will offer a variety of ethnic cuisines, there will be a silent auction showcasing the best of Newtown’s benefactors, and George Miller’s gardens will be open for tours. A glass of champagne will be offered to everyone upon arrival.

The event will run on Saturday, September 20, from 4 to 7 pm.

Tickets are $30 and available at Yankee Liquor, Drug Center Pharmacy, Lexington Gardens, Dodgingtown Market, Stop & Save Liquor, Mocha Coffee House, and C.H. Booth Library.

Call Kevin’s Community Center at 426-0496 or visit KevinsCommunityCenter.org for further details.

In case it’s needed, a rain date has been set up for September 21.

This five year anniversary is notable both for Kevin’s Community Center and for Newtown as it highlights the success of this endeavor while also validating Dr Taweh’s visionary philanthropy. Organizers are hopeful that this event will increase awareness of KCC’s mission of providing skilled and compassionate health care to those who are unable to afford it. Goals for Kevin’s Community Center include a new facility with expanded hours of operation and greater resources for providing wellness initiatives.
