Newtown Storm Competes In Ridgefield

The Storm, Newtown’s U10 boys’ travel soccer team, played in the Ridgefield SCOR Tournament during Labor Day Weekend. In their first game, Newtown defeated Ridgefield in a tightly contested match 1-0. Newtown scored early with a breakaway goal by Shane Gattey who split two defenders on his way to the goal. Mike Meyers, James Cochrane and Edwin Weatherby played great defense in front of goalies Hayes Kelchner and Alex Hess.

Newtown lost 3-1 to Darien in second game of the day. Trailing 1-0, the Storm drew even when Meyers scored from 30 yards out with a shot into the upper corner of the net. Hess and the Newtown offense kept the pressure on Darien. With the score still tied 1-1, Austin Engler hit the crossbar but Darien scored twice before the end of the game, giving the Storm their first loss of the year. Tiernan Keene, Matthew Tassiello and Robert Katrinak played tough, aggressive midfield and defense.

The Storm beat Wilton 1-0 in their third game. The Newtown offense of Thomas Leuci, Richard Ciamarra and Shane Gattey kept the action on the Wilton side of the pitch for the majority of the game. Ciamarra scored the only goal of the game with a blast past Wilton’s diving goalie. The few advances Wilton made to the Newtown goal were quickly shut down by Cochrane, Jack Ryan and Luke Caplan.

In the final game of the weekend, the young Storm team fell 5-0 to a tough Brookfield group. Hayes Kelchner did all he could to hold Brookfield to five goals. Engler and Robert Katrinak led Newtown’s offensive effort.
