Program For Teen Girls, Support Groups

At Women’s Center

DANBURY — The Women’s Center is taking registrations now for “Project Be: Be Strong, Be Amazing, Be You.”

The Women’s Center provides free and confidential services to prevent or lessen the trauma associated with domestic violence, sexual assault, and other major life transitions to thousands of women, children, and men annually. The programs of the Women’s Center are supported by state and local government, area United Way agencies and the people and businesses in the communities it serves, including Newtown.

The free seven-week “Project Be” program provides facilitated support and educational groups for area girls ages 11–12 and 13–15. Topics handled during the program will include improving self-esteem, body image and the media, healthy relationships, and bullying.

Graduates of the “Project Be” program will be invited back for exclusive events throughout the year in order to strengthen relationships and awareness of issues young women are facing.

The new weekly groups begin on Wednesday, September 26, 6 to 7:30 pm, at 8 West Street. Registration is required; call Amy at 203-731-5200, extension 213, or e-mail wcchildadvocate@yahoo.com to register or for more information.

The Women’s Center is also offering these new and seasonal support groups:

“WOMEN THRIVING” is a new ongoing weekly group that meets Monday afternoons for those who can benefit from support around relationship issues, including dealing with controlling behaviors, verbal or physical abuse, or transitioning out of relationships.

“ENDINGS” support group is for those considering or in the process of ending a marriage or relationship. This closed, facilitated evening group meets weekly for eight-week sessions in the fall and spring. Topics include the mourning process of divorce, self-esteem, coping strategies for stress, anger and loneliness, and moving beyond the divorce. The fall session begins Thursday, October 4.

“I AM OK!” support group identifies and develops skills to counter the negative factors impacting self esteem. This closed, facilitated evening group meets weekly for seven sessions in the fall and spring. The next session begins Tuesday, October 2.

Registration is required for participation in all free and confidential support groups, so call 203-731-5200 for more information and to sign up.
