Hut Hut … Youth Football Highlights

Newtown Youth Football game results from this past week are as follows:

Grade 4

Newtown 12, Ridgefield Orange 9: Newtown’s ground attack  was led by Josh Dunn who brought the ball down to the one-yard line to end the first quarter. Ryan Kost then took the QB sneak in for a touchdown behind the solid blocking of Ethan Tousignant to put Newtown up 6-0. Ridgefield scored and made the point after to bring the score to 7-6 at the half.  The second half was well fought on both sides of the ball. Newtown’s defense was strong all day with solid tackling by Josh Dunn, Alex Street, William Stenz, and Wesley Scriven. Ryan Williams, Doug Carriero and Tousignant had key fumble recoveries to give Newtown the chance they needed to pull off the victory. Newtown marched down the field behind the solid blocking of Street and Kyle Roche and Dunn ran the ball in for 6 and the final offensive score of the day, making the score 12-7 Newtown.Newtown recovered a fumble inside its own 10 yard line and could not get the first down with less than two minutes to go. A safety pulled Ridgefield to within 12-9 and Newtown had to take a free kick at the 20 yard line, giving Ridgefield a late-game chance to come back. Newtown’s Nicholas Weiland made a great tackle to save a possible touchdown on the kick return and the defense held the opponents off in the waning seconds.

Grade 5

Newtown 19, Ridgefield 0: The Nighthawks kicked off the season with a win over last year’s CVL champions. Newtown’s stout defense, led by Alex Morganti, Anthony Adamcheck, Justin Dunn, Bobby Haskins and Joe Accousti, allowed the opposition only three first downs. In the second quarter, an 18-yard run by Nevin Zink set up a drive that led to a Mitchell Savoca touchdown. In the third quarter, Nevin Zink ran through the hole opened up by blockers Adam Bell, Edward Lovely and Billy Kase for a touchdown. In the fourth quarter, Zink ran for another touchdown, then Noah LaFerriere caught a Patrick Conte pass in the end zone for the extra point.

Grade 6

Newtown 20, Southington 0: Newton amassed 245 yards and 12 first downs while holding Southington to 50 yards and forcing 5 turnovers. Newtown got on the board in the first quarter after an interception by Devin Luzietti gave it the ball in Southington territory.

Michael Doyle (59 rushing yards) had a 17-yard run and Sam Duffy a 9-yard catch prior to Doyle’s 3-yard touchdown run. The gains were made possible by the blocking of Ryan Shaw, Nick Rohrbacher, Matt Pindell, James Accousti and Nick Samuelson. Jared Pearson kicked the extra point for an 8-0 score. Early in the second quarter, an interception by Steve Faxlanger gave Newtown the ball at its own 40. A 14-play drive followed, featuring 6 runs by Doyle, including an 18-yard run on fourth and 17 from the 37. The drive culminated with Matt Maturo’s 20-yard touchdown pass to Ethan Carpenter for a 14-0 lead. Key blocks on the drive were delivered by Brendan Hensel, Carlo Fenaroli and Jeremy Salaris.Southington turned the ball over on downs at the start of the third quarter due to the tackles of Greg Harrison and Kyle Martinez, and a fumble recovery by Matt Elias. Newtown produced a 16-play drive that was highlighted by 7 runs by Pearson (who record 50 yards when all was said and done) and gains of 19 yards by Peyton Manning (34) and 12 yards by Faxlanger (24). Big holes were opened by Tim Mamman, Andrew Svanda and Colin Thies. After a drive stalled at the 11, Matt Meyers intercepted a pass to give Newtown the ball back on the 25. Luzietti (36) ran for 20 yards to set up his 5-yard TD run behind the blocks of Shawn McCarthy, Gordon Walsh and Justin Appley. Carpenter recovered the ball on the ensuing kickoff and later completed a 15-yard pass to Pearson as time ran out. Newtown has its first league game against Aspetuck this Sunday in Weston.

Grade 7

Newtown 27, Ridgefield Orange 0: The young Nighthawks rushed for 224 yards and a 7 yards per carry average with 9 different backs carrying the team to victory. The defense held Ridgefield to one first down and 25 yards of total offense. The defense was led Eric Cascone, Kevin Conte, Jake Lambert, Griffin Davis, Tim Krapf and Markus Elken up front. Nick Lotrecchiano scored on 58-yard TD and Bubba Condon added a 3-yard dive for a score. James Leuci scored on a 6-yard dive and Jaret DeVellis scored on a 12-yard counter right up the gut of the Ridgefield Defense. Tim Krapf added an extra point and Colton Smith passed to Connor Roche on another point after.
