The summer is nearly over, but tennis is still being played - outside and inside.
The summer is nearly over, but tennis is still being played â outside and inside.
The Indies have been gather for Sunday afternoon sandlot tennis (pick-up games with whomever is there â doubles, singles or mixed) from 2 to 5 pm. Many calls have been made to tell all who might want to play.
Wendy Fong and Elizabeth Lynch are the organizers.
+ The indoor season has started at Beaver Brook and begins at the Club du Lac next week. Many of the former Germantown tennis players will be playing there on the two new soft courts. It is a sad end to a tennis dynasty in Danbury.
The Germantown court was the first in Danbury and holds many fond memories for some of us who have player there for 30 years or more. Henry and Ruth Bouquin were well known throughout the Greater Danbury area. When Henry died, their son Joe and his mother managed the courts and Joe (a nationally-ranked player) gave lessons. Now Ruth is very ill and the court has been sold and will be demolished. Joe will be moving to Florida.
The Bouquins have been friends to many and we are all saddened to lose them.
+ On Saturday, September 23, the Junior NTA members will celebrate at their annual Tennis Party at Beaver Brook Tennis Club in Danbury from 7 to 10 pm. There will be fun, games, competition, and refreshments (courtesy of My Place Restaurant, The Ice Cream Shop, Dunkin Donuts, and the Newtown Tennis Association). There is no charge. Members will be receiving a flyer on the event this week. For adults, a court will be reserved for play.
+ An inter-club match with Brookfield is being slated for September 16 at Dickinson between 1 and 5 pm, with a barbecue to follow. This is the second year for the revival of the inter-club match that was traditionally run each fall between players in these two towns. The matches were hosted by first one town, then the other. There is a large trophy at stake that stays for the year with the winning team.
Early matches were held in the Brookfield town Park, but later were hosted at the Club du Lac â then known as Candlewood Tennis. Newtown hosted once on the old high school courts. Other times, Newtown hosted at Dickinson.
+ The annual General Meeting and Tennis Party are scheduled for the evening of Saturday, October 14, at Beaver Brook. New NTA officers will be elected and some very important decisions will be made. NTA members will be notified of the agenda by mail. Awards will be presented and winners of the Berlingo Tennis Challenge will be announced.
+ There will be a Fall Indoor Tennis party on November 17.
