Newtown Historical Society invites people to a 19th Century educational experience at The Little Red Schoolhouse open house on Sunday, September 27, from noon to 3 pm.

Kids and adults will get to learn about the one-room schoolhouse built in 1850, located at 7 Cold Spring Road on the grounds in front of Middle Gate Elementary School.

The event will also feature Newtown Historical Society's Miss Melissa, who will conduct a lesson on subjects taught in the 1800s. Afterwards, everyone can wind down with some cold apple cider and outdoor games common to the time period.

Admission is free, although donations to support Newtown Historical Society's ongoing preservation efforts are accepted and welcomed.

The Little Red Schoolhouse dates back to 1850, and is currently owned and maintained by Newtown Historical Society. It replaced the original schoolhouse built in 1783 that served the Bear Hills School District. The building originally stood on the north side of Toll Gate Hill, near the Newtown-Monroe town line.

Newtown Historical Society was given The Little Red Schoolhouse in 1973, under the provision that it be moved from its original site. It was then relocated to the front lawn of Middle Gate School, where it still stands today.
