To the Editor,

As I reflect on the 20 years that have passed since Tuesday morning, September 11th, 2001, I’m heartened by the way our community and our state has always seemed to grow stronger in the face of danger and adversity.

Like many communities in Southwestern Connecticut, ours claimed residents who worked in the World Trade Center complex or knew those who did.

Not far from Monroe, down on Sherwood Island state park in Westport, the Twin Towers could be seen on a clear day off the horizon of the Long Island Sound.

This year’s anniversary, which comes just as those born on September 11th enter adulthood, comes after a difficult summer for Connecticut and for our country.

The pandemic, tropical storms and struggling economy all continue to throw challenges our way. Emotions are still raw after America’s longest running war came to a dramatic close that put both our servicemen and allies in harm’s way.

But I remain confident that we will emerge from these crises stronger and united in the same way we came together in the weeks and months after 9/11.

Please keep our soldiers and our military families in your thoughts and prayers today, along with all those heroes our nation has lost in defense of freedom.
