Roadblocks To Literacy,

 A Book Discussion

SOUTHBURY — The Foibles of Phonics: And other Roadblocks to Literacy, by Robert and Lois Wolsch, is the first of four books about to be released in a four-book Literacy Assured Series in which each book’s authors address the problems which inhibit children’s literacy and severely impact on the readers of tomorrow.

The book will be the subject of the next BookTalk at Southbury Public Library, on Monday, October 2. The free program will begin at 2 pm.

“If children learned to speak as they are often taught to read and write, we’d have a nation of stutterers,” say the authors in their book. Combining their eighty years of teaching, supervision and curriculum development, Professors Robert and Lois Wolsch bring their readers into homes, classrooms, consultations, committees, and curriculum councils. They identify today’s problems, provide workable solutions, and share the products of the major concern of the schools — education in the language arts.

Publication is later this month. Participants can expect a lively and informative discussion about education today, and some new perspectives about tomorrow.

Details are available from Hilja Wescott, 264-1716, or Lois Wolsch, 262-6123. Southbury Public Library is at 561 Main Street, between Pomperaug Elementary School and Southbury Town Hall.
