MONROE — It was a night of mixed results and emotions as Newtown High School's boys' soccer team played host Masuk to a 1-1 tie in a battle under the lights on September 15. This marked NHS Coach Tony Viscuso's return to Masuk, where he coached for several years, including when current Panther Coach Jarrod Schulz (Class of 2019) was a player.

"It was great," said Viscuso, adding that former captains from his Masuk teams were on hand and visited with him.

Having coached there and knowing Schulz has carried on his tradition of leading a hard-working team with some of his own tactical touches, Viscuso was not in for any surprises in terms of the game play when these rivals went at it.

"I knew it was going to be all-out war," the coach said. "This is high school soccer — it's smash mouth."

This matchup was, as always, a physical battle — there were plenty of hard-fought 50-50 balls and it was not free of fouls — but there were things under control and stoppages at a minimum throughout the contest. The scariest moment came when Nighthawk goalkeeper Emanuel Orozco, an NHS defender, and a Masuk player all went for the ball, resulting in a collision that left the Hawk keeper on the turf just outside the 18-yard box for a few minutes before shaking it off. The play proved to be a costly one for the Nighthawks on the scoreboard as Masuk's Jack Zurich deposited the loose ball into an empty net to tie things midway through the second half.

Newtown had led for much of the night, with Jonah Kaiser converting a free kick early in the first half and its defense routinely fending off Panther attacks. The Nighthawks withstood moments of heavy pressure from the Panthers as the back line of Eddie Deraney, Sagun Meesala, George Tzakas, and Luke Libero cleared balls and broke up plays. The Hawks countered with some chances of their own led by Malakai Ortner, Kaio Dos Santos, Kaun Dos Santos, Gavin Merrifield, and Kaiser — among others — but could not break through a second time. Libero made a nice pass to set up Ortner for a one-on-one opportunity Masuk's goalkeeper broke up with an aggressive interception.

When all was said and done, Masuk had a bulk of the ball control, but defense ruled all around.

"The pressure was there from the beginning — a dump and run kind of style," Viscuso said. "It's a frustrating result but we'll take it and move on."

Newtown lost its season-opener, 3-1 at New Milford on September 11. The early portion of the schedule is not forgiving, with Pomperaug of Southbury to have visited Thursday and defending South-West Conference Champion Weston coming to Blue & Gold Stadium Saturday, September 19 at noon.
