Chris Hoagland (Castleton State menâs soccer) â Came off the bench as the Spartans defeated Johnson State (3-0) and lost to Middlebury (5-0) to move to 2-3-0 on the season â¦ Hoagland had a goal, an assist and three points through five games.

Kim Allen (Castleton State womenâs soccer) â Needed to make just five saves as the Lady Spartans nipped Johnson State, 2-1 â¦ made seven saves, but gave up a goal as the Lady Spartans fell, 1-0, to Green Mountain to fall to 1-2-1 on the season â¦ Allen has played all 380 minutes in the net for the Lady Spartans with a 1.66 goals-against average and .865 save percentage.

Tara Gaston (Gettysburg College womenâs soccer) â Scored her first collegiate goal to lead Gettysburg to a 2-1 win over Ursinus College on September 16. She converted a corner kick by Steph Heath with 1:23 left in the first half and the tally proved to be the game winner. Gaston has been starting for the Lady Bullets since the third game of the season.

Marcus Tracy (Wake Forest menâs soccer) â Had a goal as the Demon Deacons dropped a 4-3 decision to ACC rival Duke on September 8 â¦ Tracyâs goal, off an assist from Jamie Frank, evened the score at 1-1 â¦ Tracy received two yellow cards in the game and was ineligible for Wake Forestâs 2-0 win over Elon â¦ attendance for the game against Duke was 4,323, the largest in Wakeâs Spry Stadium regular season history.

Casey Frobey (Fairfield University womenâs soccer) â Played, but did not manage a shot in a 1-0 loss to Boston University on September 12 that dropped the Lady Stags to 0-3-2. Frobey has two goals and four points on the year.

Alex Konneker (Manhattan College womenâs soccer) â Notched an assist as the Lady Jaspers (#11 in the northeast)improved to 5-0-0 with a 6-0 pounding of Virginia Military Institute on September 10. Konneker has two goals and four points through five games.

Josh Rouse (Michigan State football) â Did not play in a 38-23 win over the University of Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Chelsea Morin (Ursinus College womenâs soccer) â Came off the bench as Ursinus defeated Moravian, 2-1, in overtime and lost, 2-1, to Rutgers-Camden to move to 2-2-0 on the year.

Allison Frobey (Plymouth State womenâs soccer) â Notched an assist as the Lady Panthers crushed Mitchell College, 8-0, to improve to 2-0-0 on the year.

Ryan Tracy (University of Pennsylvania menâs soccer) â Scored a goal on his only shot to lead the Quakers to a 2-1 win over Hartwick College on September 8 â¦ added another goal as the Quakers blanked Marist, 4-0, on September 10 to improve to 2-0-1 on the year.

Mike Troy (Fairfield University menâs soccer) â Started in a 3-1 win over Adelphi on September 9, but did not manage a shot on goal as the Stags improved to 3-2-0.

Rachel Bolmer (Western Connecticut field hockey) â Started, but managed just a shot as dropped 1-0 decisions to Salem State on September 9 and Bridgewater State on September 16. Has a team-high three goals for the 1-3-0 Lady Colonials.

Nick Mentessana (University of Missouri at Rolla menâs soccer) â Started in a 2-0 loss to Gannon University on September 8 and started (with a shot on goal) in a 2-1 win over winless Ashland on September 10.

Brian Miles (Montclair State menâs soccer) â Notched an assist as Montclair defeated Wilkes University, 3-0, and managed a shot in a 1-0 win over College Misericordia as the Red Hawks improved to 5-0-0.

Matt Pachniuk (Wheaton College menâs soccer) â Through five games, the senior goaltender has allowed just four goals in more than 474 minutes of action, giving him a 0.76 goals-against average, one shutout, and a .846 save percentage with 22 stops as the Lyons go to 4-1-0.

Brendan Cavanaugh (Roger Williams University menâs soccer) â Has started all five games and has four shots for the 1-3-1 Hawks.

Tom Ryan (Worcester Polytechnic Institute football) â Caught a team-high four balls for 42 yards (with a long of 17) as WPI smashed Becker, 52-16, on September 16.

Derek Miles (Eastern Connecticut State University menâs soccer) â Got the start and played 37 minutes in a 2-0 loss to Ramapo College of New Jersey on September 9 and got the start, playing 34 minutes, in a 3-1 loss to Connecticut College as ECSU dropped to 0-3-1 on the year.

It’s important to clarify that while public process matters, so does the right of a property owner to reasonably develop land they legally own—especially when they follow the rules and engage with the town in good faith. The Board of Selectmen (BOS), whether one agrees with their decision or not, did not “give away” anything. The land in question was part of a road that had been unused and undeveloped for generations. There was no public access, no signage, and no infrastructure—just an overgrown path most residents never knew existed. Mr. Ackert calls the discontinuance “illegal,” but state law grants municipalities the authority to discontinue roads, subject to procedural requirements. The fact that this matter is in litigation shows that questions of law are being properly addressed in court—not in letters to the editor. If the court finds procedural flaws, they’ll be corrected. That’s how the legal system works. Real solutions are found through public process and the courts, not through social media outrage. What’s missing from this conversation is a recognition that towns need to balance many interests: history, environment, public access, private property rights, and economic development. And while the newly championed Revolutionary War heritage is important, there are also pressing modern realities: towns need housing, economic vitality, and responsible development. These things don’t happen in a vacuum—they require compromise, planning, and often, yes, change. If residents truly wish to preserve this trail as public space, the appropriate path is through purchase, conservation easement, or formal designation—not by expecting private landowners to bear the burden of public sentiment. If the writer believes so strongly in its value, perhaps they might consider investing in its preservation themselves. We can honor our history without freezing our town in time. Development and preservation aren’t mutually exclusive—but vilifying one side of the conversation only deepens division. Let’s focus on solutions that balance respect for the past with the rights and needs of those who live here now.

Dan was a real gentleman. I had the honor of knowing him for about 10 years from high school and into early adulthood. He was always upbeat and amiable. His love of golf was boundless. I remember him droning on about the type of wedge this or that professional golfer was playing at any given time. He loved to play also. Dan made the winning putt that clinched a championship for NHS men’s golf in 1984. It was a snaking, downhill putt that few people would have had the nerve or imagination to have holed at such a critical moment. It was magic!! You are a true gem, Dan. May your eternal reward be endless days of long, straight drives and the sound of difficult putts finding the bottom of the hole.
