Joan Gail Bowers, 68, wife of Robert W. Bowers, died at Danbury Hospital on September 15 following a brief illness. She was born in Bridgeport on November 13, 1937, daughter of Henry and Augusta (McGowan) Olson.

Mrs Bowers had been a resident of Newtown since 1966. She received an associate’s degree in mental health from Mattatuck College and worked for the Mental Health Association of Connecticut for seven years. In 1992 she became the director of the food service program at Nunnawauk Meadows in Newtown.

Mrs Bowers loved music and was always able to laugh at herself. Her cup was always “half full.” She was a regular contributor to the Danbury Food Bank and to Newtown’s Food Pantry and for 2½ years she served on the Board of Directors of the AIDS Ministry of Danbury.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Deborah Kliegl of California and Dawn Hafner Bowers of Windsor; a son, Robert W. Bowers, Jr of Watertown; two grandchildren, Heather and Robert; a brother, John Olson of South Carolina; and several nieces and nephews.

A memorial service will be held at Newtown Meeting House on Saturday, September 23, at 10:30 am. Burial in Village Cemetery, Newtown, will be private. There are no calling hours.

Green Funeral Home, 57 Main Street, Danbury, is in charge of arrangements.
