Light The Night Returning To Danbury
DANBURY â The 2nd Annual Danbury Light The Night Walk will take place later this month, and Newtown residents are among those planning to participate and hoping others will still decide to join them.
The Danbury walk, a fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society of Fairfield County, will return to Western Connecticut State University on Friday, September 29. The event offers courses of two and three miles. Light The Night walks are held across the country.
Cancer survivors will carry illuminated white balloons, and all other walkers â the supporters of searching for a cure â will carry illuminated red balloons to celebrate and commemorate lives that have been touched by cancer.
There are more than 747,000 Americans currently fighting blood cancers. Every five minutes someone new is diagnosed. Every ten minutes someone dies of a blood cancer.
Anyone can take part; children, adults, and seniors are all welcome. This is a casual walk with no fitness requirements. Members of the Newtown Middle School Interact Club, who showed up for last yearâs debut Danbury event, have already committed to participate next weekend. The Newtown teams were credited with raising more than $4,000 last year.
Ginny Chion is also organizing a team from Newtown, which already includes Emily Montoya and her mother, Beth Myer; Emily is a third grade student at Hawley School who was diagnosed with ALL Leukemia in early 2000 and has been in remission since October 2000.
Mrs Chion lost her son, Greg, in October 2000, less than a year after being diagnosed with AML leukemia.
âWe had over 300 walkers, on four teams, from Newtown last year,â Mrs Chion said. âIâm hoping for more participants still this year.â
In addition to walking, there is also music, food, and family activities.
âThis is a very family-oriented, fun event,â she promised. âWe saw people not only from Newtown and Danbury but also Bethel, Brookfield, New Fairfield, and Ridgefield last year.â
Registration for 2006 Danbury Light The Night will open at 5:30 pm, dinner will begin around 6, and the walk will follow at 7. Dinner will again be provided by Madisonâs of Shelton.
Anyone interested in joining the Newtown team, or even forming their own team, is asked to contact Mrs Chion at 426-0851. To support a team financially, contact Mrs Chion or visit the national website LightTheNight.org. Full information about walking and incentives is also available online.
My Place Fundraiser
A few nights before the Light The Night Walk in Danbury, one of Newtownâs most community-oriented restaurants will join the fundraising efforts.
My Place Restaurant has agreed to hold a fundraiser for The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. All orders placed on Monday, September 25, between 5 and 9 pm, will share part of their proceeds with the society. Eat in and delivery orders all quality; those placing orders should simply mention they would like part of their order to benefit the Light The Night Walk, and the restaurant will take care of the rest.
