Paul H. Nordman, 89, a former resident of Newtown, died in Concord, N.H., on September 15. Mr Nordman was the husband of the late Claire C. Nordman, who died ten years ago this month. The Nordmans lived in Newtown during the 1970s and early 1980s before moving to Lakeport, N.H. Mr Nordman had lived in Concord for the past three years.
Mr Nordman is survived by his daughter Laurie Nordman and her husband, Craig Stedman; and two grandchildren, Nathan and Lydia Stedman, all of Westborough, Mass.
Mr Nordman was born on January 4, 1917, in Keene, N.H., and attended that cityâs public schools as well as Keene State College, from which he graduated in 1938. After working as a teacher for four years, he joined General Motors Corp in 1942 and worked for GM until his retirement in 1979.
During World War II, GM assigned Mr Nordman to service airplane engines in the Pacific Theater. He served on aircraft carriers and accompanied flight crews on numerous missions. After the war, he worked for GMâs locomotive division, teaching train crews how to operate the diesel engines that were then being introduced. He later became an administrator at GMâs corporate training facilities, working in Buffalo, N.Y., Milwaukee, Wis., and Tarrytown, N.Y.
Mr Nordman flew small planes and was an avid hiker, skier, golfer, birdwatcher, and woodcarver. As a Boy Scout, he achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and in 1933 helped to cut the Daniel Webster Scout Trail on Mount Madison in New Hampshireâs White Mountains.
A memorial service will be held for Mr Nordman on Thursday, September 28, at the Havenwood campus of the Havenwood-Heritage Heights retirement community in Concord.
Donations in Mr Nordmanâs memory may be sent to Havenwood-Heritage Heights, 33 Christian Avenue, Concord NH 03301. The donations received will be used for a memorial gift to the retirement community.
