Charles “Chuck” Edward Pilchard, of Little Egg Harbor, N.J., and formerly of Newtown, died peacefully on his own terms, September 21, with his loving family by his side. Mr Pilchard lived to the fine young age of 80 years.

He was born in the small mountain town of Terra Alta, W.V., and was the proud son of Lloyd and Daphene Pilchard. He lived his formative years there, hunting, fishing, playing trumpet in the high school band, and driving his father’s Buick over 100 miles an hour before finishing school at Terra Alta High. He lettered in basketball, baseball, and football.

He attended the University of West Virginia where he met the love of his life, a New England girl, Melissa Meyer. Together they transferred to the University of Maryland where they finished their college educations and began their 60 years of life together as husband and wife. They moved to Maryland, then East Hampton, Mass., where their first son, Edward Benjamin, was born.

Mr Pilchard was building a career in marketing, and they soon moved to Greenfield, Mass., where their second son, Benjamin Charles, was born. Finally settling in Newtown, in 1974, Mr Pilchard spent the next 30 years patiently raising the boys, loving his wife, and marching up the marketing ladder at The New York Times.

While enjoying life in Newtown, he was the chairman of the Democratic Town Committee, sat on the police commission, and drove his boys to any sports activity in which they participated.

The Pilchards retired to Little Egg Harbor, where they proceeded to travel and see the world, and make new friends. He had a patient, warming, and cheerful West Virginia spirit, which is now free. “But we, the Pilchards, know he won’t be going far; he will be cheering us all on and patiently waiting for the love of his life to join him in never ending peace.”

His beloved wife of Little Egg Harbor; and sons Benjamin and his wife, Dr Kirstin Pilchard, and Edward, all of Newtown, survive Mr Pilchard.

Visiting hours will take place Saturday, September 26, from 9:30 am until the memorial service, at 10:30 am, at Maxwell Funeral Home, 160 Mathistown Road, Little Egg Harbor, N.J.
