Newtown Ecumenical Workcamp Servants (NEWS) will host an information session for young adults and parents interested in learning about the town’s longstanding interfaith workcamp program.

NEWS is a mission group engaging youth from eighth grade through high school seniors. Each summer a service trip is planned to take place.

Next summer NEWS will again partner with Appalachia Service Project (ASP), working in the Appalachia region to makes homes warmer, safer, and drier. Planning and fundraising for the trip is a year-long process for the participants, which is all worthwhile when they learn how they are able to improve living conditions, spirits, and the faith of the people with whom they work.

The 2023 trip is planned for June 24-July 2.

The information session is planned for Tuesday, October 4, at 7 pm. It will be at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street.

Volunteers will share information about NEWS, its fundraising opportunities, next summer’s planned trip, and responsibilities of those who decide to join the effort.

Reservations are not required but additional information is available from NEWS Board Member Laura Roche at lauraroche41@gmail.com.

Following two delays — but never losing focus or their commitment — 47 residents finally made their way to Puerto Rico in late June, representing the current members of Newtown Ecumenical Workcamp Servants (NEWS). Young adults and chaperones work side by side on NEWS trips, which are often educational and enriching for all involved.
