Hit Bridge

Newtown Police report Parminder Singh, 32, of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, operating a 2016 Freightliner Carrier, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road at 7:16 am September 5. The top of Singh’s vehicle struck the underside of the overpass railroad bridge.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was not towed. No visible damage was done to the bridge.

Singh was issued a verbal warning for operation of a motor vehicle exceeding posted clearance.

Vehicles Merged

Newtown Police report William Toledo, 41, of Newtown, operating a 2000 Lexus LX-470, was stopped eastbound on Berkshire Road at the intersection with Toddy Hill Road, at 11:59 am September 5. In an adjacent lane, also stopped at the intersection, was Nathaniel Moreland, 23, of Seymour, operating a 2018 Ford F59. Police say both began traveling eastbound and the traffic lanes merged, and the passenger side of Moreland’s vehicle made contact with the driver’s side of Toledo’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

The incident is still under investigation.

Following Too Close

Newtown Police report Keith Hedin, 67, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Jeep Patriot, was traveling southbound on South Main Street at 6:55 am September 7. He was traveling behind a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta operated by Steven Farkas, 48, of South Britain. Police say the front of Hedin’s vehicle collided with the rear of Farkas’ vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Hedin was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Too Fast For Conditions

Newtown Police report Sheneka Williams, 36, of Bridgeport, operating a 2020 Kia Sportage, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road in the area of Swamp Road, at 10:49 pm September 9. Williams ran off the roadway while negotiating a curve, causing the front bumper and right side of the vehicle to strike an embankment.

Police say Williams and three passengers all suffered suspected minor injuries, but only Williams and one passenger were transported to Danbury Hospital. Williams’ vehicle was towed from the scene.

Williams was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions and operating a motor vehicle without a license.

Rear-Ended At Red Light

Newtown Police report Salvador Pandolfi, 72, of Danbury, operating a 2022 Toyota Tundra, was traveling eastbound on Wasserman Way at 11:46 am September 10. Patricia Debisschop, 53, of Southington, operating a 2018 Nissan Rogue, was stopped at a red light eastbound on Wasserman way, ahead of Pandolfi. The front of Pandolfi’s vehicle struck the rear of Debisschop’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Pandolfi received a verbal warning for failure to drive a reasonable distance apart.

Two Injured

Newtown Police report Jayda Jacobs, 19, of Danbury, operating a 2005 Toyota Camry, was traveling eastbound on Botsford Hill Road in the area of Swamp Road at 10:11 pm September 10. The vehicle left the roadway and struck an embankment.

Jacobs and a passenger were transported to Danbury Hospital with suspected minor injuries. The vehicle was towed.

Jacobs was issued an infraction for traveling too fast for conditions.

Collision At Intersection

Newtown Police report Siddhartha Gupta, 35, of Monroe, operating a 2003 Lexus ES, was stopped facing westbound on Turnberry Lane, preparing to turn left on Toddy Hill Road at 5:43 pm September 12. Anthony Neri, 80, of Sandy Hook, was traveling northbound on Toddy Hill Road. Police say Gupta began turning left onto Toddy Hill Road and the front right side of his vehicle struck the passenger side of Neri’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Gupta was issued a verbal warning for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Parking Lot Fender Bender

Newtown Police report Maria Teraszkiewicz, 79, of Newtown, operating a 2012 Toyota Prius, was attempting to pull into a space in a parking lot on Berkshire Road at 7:42 pm September 12. The vehicle made contact with a 2023 Hyundai Santa Fe owned by David Smiley, 47, of Sandy Hook.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

No enforcement action was taken since the incident occurred on private property.

Unreasonable Distance

Newtown Police report Brandon Dwyer, 27, of Monroe, operating a 2003 Honda Civic, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 10:35 am September 13. He was traveling behind a 2024 Honda HR-V operated by Garcia Sotomayor, 36, of Bridgeport. Police say Sotomayor came to a stop at the intersection with Buttonshop Road for a red light, and Dwyer was unable to stop in time, and the front of his vehicle made contact with the rear of Sotomayor’s vehicle.

Sotomoyor was transported to Danbury Hospital for suspected minor injuries. Sotomayor’s vehicle was towed.

Dwyer was issued an infraction for traveling an unreasonable distance apart.

Stolen Car Sought

Newtown Police report that sometime between 5 pm September 13 and 7 am September 14, a white 2020 Jeep Cherokee with Wisconsin plate APU3312 was taken from a residence at 39 Brookwood Drive.

Anyone who may have seen or heard anything suspicious in the area during that time is asked to contact Officer Steve Borges at the Newtown Police Department at 203-426-5841.

Hit Entering Lot

Newtown Police report William Kobe, 41, of Bethel, operating a 2012 Honda Accord, was traveling eastbound on Sugar Street at 4:46 pm September 14. He was traveling behind a 2016 Lincoln MKZ operated by Katherine Nichols, 18, of Sandy Hook. Police say Nichols stopped and was waiting to turn into the parking lot of 144 Sugar Street, and Kobe rear-ended her vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Kobe was given a verbal warning for following too close.

Drivers Get Tickets

Newtown Police report Kevin Sharon, 50, of Newtown, operating a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado, was traveling eastbound on Hattertown Road at 7:21 pm September 14. Kelly Harran, 54, of Redding, operating a 2015 BMW X1, was traveling southbound on Key Rock Road. Police say both vehicles failed to grant right of way at the intersection of both roads, causing the front bumper of Sharon’s vehicle to strike the right rear passenger door of Harran’s vehicle.

No injuries were reported. Harran’s vehicle was towed from the scene.

Both operators were issued an infraction for failure to grant right of way at an intersection.

Failure To Maintain Lane

Newtown Police report Kurtis Narus, 57, of Shelton, operating a 2014 Hyundai Santa Fe, was traveling southbound on Botsford Hill Road near Swamp Road at 9:11 pm September 14. The vehicle left the roadway and collided with a utility pole.

No injuries were reported. The vehicle was towed.

Narus was issued an infraction for failure to maintain a lane.

DUI Charge

Newtown Police responded to the area of South Main Street and Botsford Hill Road for the report of a two-vehicle collision at 11:42 pm September 14. Police say upon investigation, Martin Laroche, 19, of Monroe, was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, reckless driving, and following too close.

Laroche was released on a $100 bond with a court date of September 27 in Danbury Superior Court.

Warrant Arrest

Newtown Police report that on September 15, officers performed a traffic stop for a motor vehicle improperly using a marker plate. The operator was identified as Michael Hagan of Woodbury. Hagan was found to have a warrant out for his arrest for failure to appear in court. Police say Hagan was arrested and charged with operation of an unregistered motor vehicle, improper use of marker plates, illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, and second-degree failure to appear.

Hagan was released on a $10,000 bond with a court date of October 3 in Danbury Superior Court.

Wallet Found

Newtown Police report that a wallet was turned into the Newtown Police Department at 12:11 pm September 16. It was found in the area of Sherman Street on Berkshire Road. The wallet is camo with brown leather trim made by Carhartt. Inside the wallet there are several gift cards and a picture of someone playing youth football on the Nighthawks team.

Traveling Unreasonably Fast

Newtown Police arrested Brittany Agachinski, 26, of Newtown, at 6:11 pm September 16, on the charges of illegal operation of a motor vehicle while under suspension, traveling unreasonably fast, and failure to insure a private motor vehicle. She was released on a promise to appear with a court date of October 3.

Both Vehicles Towed

Newtown Police report that Graham Sturges, 18, of Sandy Hook, operating a 2020 GMC Terrain, was stopped at the stop sign at the intersection of Currituck Road and Main Street at 8:14 pm September 16. Scott Carmignani, 54, of Danbury, operating a 2000 Chevrolet Malibu, was traveling northbound on Main Street. Police say Sturges turned onto Main Street when it was unsafe to do so, and the front bumper of Carmignani’s vehicle struck the left front bumper of Sturges’ vehicle. The impact caused Carmignani’s vehicle to run off the road and strike a tree.

Sturges and a passenger in Carmignani’s vehicle suffered suspected minor injuries but were not transported. Both vehicles were towed.

Sturges was issued an infraction for failure to obey a stop sign.

Malibu Hits Kona

Newtown Police report Gabrielle Rago, 25, of Stamford, operating a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, was traveling northbound on South Main Street at 11:44 am September 17. He was traveling behind a 2023 Hyundai Kona operated by Rebekah Brady, 24, of Newtown. Brady stopped for traffic, and the front of Rago’s vehicle struck the rear of Brady’s.

No injuries were reported. Neither vehicle was towed.

Rago was issued a verbal warning for following too close.

Newtown Police, Sandy Hook Volunteer Fire & Rescue, Botsford Fire Rescue, Newtown Volunteer Ambulance Corps, Nuvance Ambulance, and a paramedic all responded to Berkshire Road at Lone Oak Meadows just before 3 pm Sunday, September 17, following a multiple vehicle crash with injuries. Newtown Police report Maura Ann Drabik, 70, of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2016 Toyota Highlander eastbound on Berkshire Road/Route 34. At the same time, Bruno Ranolfi, 18, also of Sandy Hook, was operating a 2010 BMW 335xi westbound on Berkshire Road. In the area of Lone Oak Meadows, Drabik began to make a left turn in front of the BMW. The front of the Toyota hit the front of the BMW, which then veered onto Lone Oak Meadows and hit the front of a 2004 Saab 9-3 that was at the stop sign on Lone Oak. The BMW then went off the roadway and struck a utility pole off the westbound shoulder of Berkshire and Lone Oak Meadows. Drabik, Ranolfi, and the passenger in the BMW were all transported to the hospital for suspected minor injuries, according to the police report. When the BMW struck the utility pole it caused low-hanging wires across Berkshire Road, which closed that road for several hours. The accident is under investigation. —Botsford Fire Rescue photo
