‘Murder Abroad’ Heads For Israel

BETHEL — On Tuesday, October 10, from 7:30 to 9 pm, Bethel Public Library will continue its fall book discussion series, “Murder Abroad.” Each month through December, the focus will be on a mystery set in a different part of the globe. The October selection is Murder on a Kibbutz, by Batya Gur, which is set in Israel.

Originally released in Hebrew in 1991, Murder on a Kibbutz is the third mystery featuring Israeli policeman Michael Ohayon to be translated into English. The author’s first two books, Literary Murder and The Saturday Morning Murder, both achieved critical and popular acclaim.

This time out, Ohayon, now head of the National Division’s department for investigation of serious crimes, must solve a homicide that takes him into the closed society of a kibbutz, a communal agricultural collective.

Ironically, the kibbutz in question thrives through the manufacture and sale of cosmetic face cream. As Ohayon probes for answers concerning the murder, the author raises the question: Are kibbutzes, which once fulfilled a useful function in the creation of Israel, an idealistic notion whose time has passed?

The discussion will be moderated by Lauren Baratz-Logsted, a book reviewer for Publishers Weekly, a freelance editor and writer, and a member of Bethel Library’s staff. Book discussions stake place in the Seelye Room with refreshments provided by The Friends of the Bethel Public Library. Registration for the program is suggested.

All programs sponsored by the Bethel Public Library are free, open to the public, and meet accessibility requirements for the disabled. Those needing special accommodations should contact the library as soon as possible to make arrangements. Bethel Library, at 189 Greenwood Avenue, can be reached by calling 794-8756
