Newtown Students Receive John Hopkins University Recognition
Fraser-Woods school fifth grade student Julia DiMartino, St Rose fifth grade student Nadine Sun, and Reed Intermediate School sixth grader Judge Russell were among students recognized by The Johnâs Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth for academic achievement at a ceremony at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain on September 25.
The awards ceremony was one of two this fall that will honor the stateâs elementary and middle school students who distinguished themselves through special testing as being among the most academically gifted young students in the country, according to a press release from Johns Hopkins University.
The students earned their opportunity for recognition by participating in the academic Talent Search organized by The Johns Hopkins University Center for Talented Youth.
Since 1979, the Center for Talented Youth has sought the most academically able elementary and middle school students each year and encouraged the enrollment in the centerâs annual Talent Search. Students enrolled in the Talent Search go on to test through the fall and spring.
The results of these tests give families a better idea of a childâs academic talents, earn children a possible recognition through the centerâs awards ceremonies, and possibly qualify a student for the centerâs summer programs or distance education courses.
In 2009, more than 57,000 students worldwide participated in the Talent Searches offered through the center. Now in its third decade of service, the Center for Talented Youth identifies Americaâs top students in grades two through eight.
