Paul Winter Will Open Discovery Celebrations

BRIDGEPORT — Innovative composer and musician Paul Winter will open Celebrations 2000 at The Discovery Museum in Bridgeport on Sunday, October 15, with performances at 1 and 3 pm.

The Celebration 2000 series will continue on Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, beginning at 7:30 each night with a special Discovery Museum edition of Continuum Marvels, the multi-media and theatrical performance experience that tells the story of human inquiry through art and science.

General admission for the Paul Winter performance is $20, with a special ticket package that includes an autographed compact disc for $60. General admission for Continuum Marvels is $15. A combination general admission ticket package for both performances is $30. A combination admission for the Paul Winter special ticket package and Continuum Marvels is $70.

Paul Winter, who has celebrated the diversity of music and sound for 30 years, has won three Grammy Awards for both folk and New Age recordings. His musical realm has forged a newly styled “Earth Music” by combining the traditions of many of the world’s cultures with the sounds of what he calls “the greater symphony of the Earth,” including wolves, whales, eagles and other “wilderness musicians.”

The Paul Winter Sextet was the first jazz group sent abroad by the US State Department and became the first jazz group to officially perform at the White House, at the request of First Lady Jackie Kennedy.

Continuum Marvels is produced by Projects for a New Millennium, a non-profit organization that provides collaborative opportunities for artists, scientists, technologists, educators and environmentalists to explore the relationships between art, science and the environment through creative inquiry, education and technology. The organization was founded by creative director Joy Wulke of Stoney Creek.

The multimedia production uses original music, dance and audience participation to explore the scientific discoveries and observations made during the last 1,000 years.

Both the Paul Winter and Continuum Marvels performances are partially funded by grant from Connecticut Commission on the Arts.

The Discovery Museum is at 4450 Park Avenue in Bridgeport, one mile south of the Merritt Parkway. Contact the museum at 203/372-3521 for additional information or ticket reservations.
