Free Audubon Programs

SOUTHBURY — On Wednesday, October 17, at 9 am, the Audubon Center at Bent of the River will host a free bird walk. Participants will be looking for some of the later fall migrants, especially sparrows.

The walk is well suited for all levels of birders, including beginners who want to learn more about identifying birds. Meet at the visitor parking lot at 185 East Flat Hill Road and bring binoculars if possible.

On Saturday, October 20, the Audubon Center at Bent of the River is planning a Sachem’s Ridge hike beginning at 9 am. Sachem’s Ridge was purchased by the Audubon Center last fall after a successful fundraising campaign. The State of Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection’s Open Space and Watershed Acquisition Grant Program provided the first major donation with a grant of $192,875. This was followed by many generous gifts from individuals and organizations interested in land conservation, and foundations.

Participants in Saturday’s walk will explore some of the new trails in the area. Although many trees will have lost their leaves, Sachem’s Ridge is rich in oaks that should be at their peak at this time. About three hours will be spent hiking up to and then around Sachem’s Ridge.

This program is also free and open to the public, all ages. Meet at the visitor parking lot at 185 East Flat Hill Road.

The trails of the center are open to visitors every day, dawn to dusk. For additional information call 264-5098 Monday through Friday between 8 am and 5 pm.
