Pizza & Politics Forum Set For October 22

The Chamber of Commerce of Newtown will conduct its annual Pizza & Politics event Monday, October 22, at the Fireside Inn. Doors open at 6 pm. The $10 admission includes pizza, pasta, and salad.

Tickets can be purchased at the Cyrenius H. Booth Library, Avancé Esthétiques, Newtown Country Realty, Newtown Savings Bank, Newtown Florist, and the accounting firm of Clavette, Josselyn & Co., LLC.

The event will be co-sponsored by the Newtown Lions Club and the Newtown Women’s Club. The annual dinner-debate provides residents with a chance to meet and hear the candidates. This year, the race for first selectman pits Herb Rosenthal against Owen Carney. There are also several candidates seeking election to the Legislative Council, and Joe Bojnowski and Bill Brimmer seek re-election to the Board of Selectmen.

There will also be discussion regarding the proposed changes to the town government and members of the Charter Revision Commission will be on hand to answer questions. The proposal calls for the elimination of the Board of Selectmen, the creation of a Board of Finance, and increased authority to the first selectman, including veto power over the Legislative Council.

Questions from the audience are presented to the candidates through a moderator, who will be provided by a League of Women Voters representative.

For more information, call the Chamber office at 426-2695.
