Newtown Nighthawks Band And Guard Make Third Place In Competition

Newtown Nighthawks Band And Guard made third place on Saturday, September 26, in a competition held at Brien McMahon High School, in Norwalk.

By making third place, Newtown beat expectations after choosing to compete as the smallest band in the Class V division.

Newtown has competed in Class IV since 2005, winning the championship three out of the last four years. Class V includes much larger bands, and has always been extremely competitive. In 2002, when Newtown competed in the Class V championship, they placed fifth out of five bands. In 2004, they placed fourth in the championship.

On Saturday, Newtown placed third overall, beating New Milford, Port Chester, and Ramsey. Newtown’s score of 79.45 put them only about 2.75 points behind the leaders Trumbull and Norwalk, and Newtown has about 40 fewer band and guard members than each of the other two schools.

Their next competition will be on Saturday, October 3 at Trumbull High School. The championship will take place November 14 in Bridgeport. Video from Saturday’s competition can be found at www.youtube.com/watch?v=AwMkgZcs6O4&feature=channel_page.
