October At The Women’s Center

DANBURY — In recognition of October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, the Women’s Center of Greater Danbury is making available purple ribbons as a symbol of the stand against domestic violence in all its forms. Regular purple ribbons are available free; ceramic ribbons are $3.

A Domestic Abuse Support Group will begin meeting Tuesday evenings in Danbury. The New Milford Domestic Abuse group continues to meet on Thursday evenings.

As a member of the Greater Danbury Coalition Against Domestic Violence, the Women’s Center will be participating in the Road to Hope 2, a Conference on domestic violence, on Friday, October 20. Keynote speaker will be attorney Jill Davies addressing “Domestic Violence and Poverty: Creating more effective responses for economically poor battered women and their families.”

Workshops on domestic violence and the law, diversity/cultural issues pertaining to domestic violence, deconstructing the myth of the Battered Women Syndrome, as well as self care in the high burnout profession of domestic violence, will be presented by experts and advocates in the battered women’s movement. Call the Center at 731-5200 for information and registration fees.

Domestic Violence Hotline Training for Women’s Center volunteers begins October 21. Contact Melanie at 731-5200 for more information.

In addition, the Center’s 50+ Group will continue to meet from noon to 1:30 pm on the first and third Saturday of the month. This drop-in group invites women to bring their favorite book to spotlight at their October 21 meeting. The Center is located on 2 West Street.
