Dogs’ Best Friends

To the Editor:

On behalf of the dogs at the Newtown Pound, Canine Advocates of Newtown, Inc would like to say thank you to First Selectman Herb Rosenthal for his unwavering support and commitment.

Herb is a true dog lover who has been there for Canine Advocates since we began to walk the dogs and help to find homes for them. He encouraged us before, during, and after our incorporation as a nonprofit group. Herb was always ready to listen, encourage, and help make improvements at the Newtown Pound. He has proven himself to be “Dog’s Best Friend.”

We also want to thank Brian Silverlieb, DVM of Mt Pleasant Hospital for Animals for his unending support. He is never too busy to see a dog, give advice, send assistance to the pound, or endure another long meeting. If a community can be judged by the way it treats its animals, both Herb and Brian show the compassion and integrity that bear witness to this belief.

After four long years of working together to have all Newtown pound dogs spayed or neutered before adoption, we have finally achieved this goal. This month four dogs at our pound were the first to be spayed or neutered when they received their vaccinations, thanks to the cooperation of Chief Michael Kehoe, Sgt John Cole, and Animal Control Officer George Mattegat.

We are so thankful and proud to be able to now say all dogs from the Newtown pound have been spayed or neutered prior to adoption. We know that, for many reasons, this will make them better companions. Thank you Herb Rosenthal and Brian Silverlieb, for without you this goal would still not have been realized.

Sincerely,

Virginia Jess

President of Canine Advocates of Newtown, Inc
