Strides Walkers

There is still time to join the team being assembled by Judy Volpe of Avance Esthetiques Day Spa in Newtown to participate in the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk that will be held on October 19 at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

 Ms Volpe’s team of walkers will step off at 11 am. This is the 10th anniversary of the Making Strides walk and the ninth year that she has put together a team for the American Cancer Society event that raises money for cancer research, support programs, and public education and awareness.

“Each year I find that I, like many people, am touched more and more by this dreadful disease,” she said. “This year I am hoping to bring an even larger team to this wonderful event. The first year, with only three weeks notice, I showed up with a team of 11. Each year my team grows; last year we have over 70 walkers [and] were one of the largest teams there.

“Our team has consistently been a top fund raiser,” she said. “Over the last three years alone we have raised more than $30,000. I encourage everyone to check your schedule and if you are going to be in town on October 19, please join our team. If not, we would welcome sponsorship.”

 The annual event during Breast Cancer Awareness Month is noncompetitive and can be anywhere from one to five miles. The proceeds of the event are raised by donations from people who sponsor the walkers, not by the number of miles walked. A tailgate party traditionally follows the walk. The event usually is over by 1:30 pm.
