Around The Horn — Fall Ball Results

Newtown Rebels 12 Newtown Destroyers 7: Rebels relief pitchers Brandon Marks, Ben Stoller and Ryan Daignault hurled five shutout innings, as the Rebels bounced back from 5-3 and 7-4 deficits to improve to 6-1 Sunday at Sandy Hook’s Walnut Tree Field. Marks held the Destroyers at bay, throwing three scoreless, one-hit innings from the third through the fifth and Stoller and Daignault closed out the game without yielding a hit. The Rebels jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first. Stefan Hennessey singled and scored on two errors and a passed ball. Marks singled, John Hampford walked and both scored on a clutch single down the right field line by Ryan Pisani. T

he Destroyers responded with five runs in their half of the inning. Tom Floros, Mike Scharfenberg and Justin Cherry walked to load the bases. Alex Lapinksi crushed a 2-RBI single to right center, and Alex Roche drilled an RBI single. Harrison Buzzi walked to drive in a run, and Ryan Errico, who had walked, scored on an error. Hennessey, the Rebels’ relief pitcher, prevented further damage by coming in and striking out two consecutive batters. In the second inning, the Rebels got within one run when Harry Snellback walked, stole second and scored on a line-drive single to right field by Mike Burton. The Destroyers responded with two more runs in their half of the inning to open a 7-4 lead. Sean Dardine walked and Scharfenberg singled. Dardine scored on a groundout by Lapinski, his third RBI of the game, and Scharfenberg came home on an error. The Rebels responded in the top of the third with five runs, and they never trailed again. Hampford crushed a two-RBI single in the inning.

Newtown Rebels 7, Green Goblins 6: The Goblins stormed back from a 7-1 deficit in the final inning, but the Rebels hung on for the win Saturday at Sandy Hook’s Walnut Tree Field. Rebels’ left fielder Greg Hennessy back-pedaled and made the game-ending catch with two players on base. Until the final inning, Rebels pitchers John Hampford, Ryan Daignault, Eric Pisani, Brandon Marks and Ben Stoller held the Goblins to three hits and one unearned run. The Rebels’ Stefan Hennessey opened the scoring in the first inning, ripping a double and scoring after two errors. In the second inning, Pisani and his brother, Ryan, each walked, and Harry Snellback drilled a single to left field to load the bases. Greg Hennessey reached on an error by the third baseman, scoring Eric Pisani. Ryan Daignault  and Ben Stoller also drove in runs.

The Rebels scored three more in the fifth inning. Stoller singled, stole second and scored when Stefan Hennessey reached base on a wild throw by the third baseman. Marks drilled a single, and Hampford drove in Hennesey with an RBI groundout to first base. The Goblins got on the scoreboard in the sixth inning when John Lebinski walked and later stole home. In the seventh inning, Greg Horne drilled an RBI single during a Goblins’ rally.
