Your dog could be the next Park and Bark Dog of The Week.

The Newtown Parks & Recreation Department has started an effort through its Newtown Park and Park Facebook page to "keep people active on our Facebook page and to hit 1,000 likes." The page had received 989 likes as of September 20.

Residents can visit the Facebook page where the pet of the week, along with other activities and announcements, are featured. Online readers can get on their computers and select a thumbs up to Like the page and its posts, and leave any comments there.

As of September 26 the Facebook page was featuring a picture of Sweetie as the most recent Dog of the Week.

"Gentle as she is beautiful," the post tells those visiting the page. "Still a pup at heart, she loves to romp at Park and Bark."

Also being celebrated this month was Fred, who has grown up at the dog park, according to the note accompanying a pair of photos of the chocolate Lab.

A post from September 7 highlights Sonar. It states, "Sonar. Welcome to Park and Bark! Rescued just four days ago, he is loving 'country living'. He has a big new family to celebrate a renewed life with brother Radar, two cats, five chickens and new friends at Park and Bark."

Ken was dog of the week on September 2. His post says, "Ken is a Park and Bark regular. Not many dogs are standing still when he is around! Two years young and fast as a fox and curious as a cat... but we all know what happens next at the fountain!"

Under each comment is a photo. Willow, sleek and black, is resting, front paws stretched out before her. Sonar's photo showed him playing in the grass. Ken, who appears wily and playful, is seen lapping at water and sitting, posing for his photograph. Prior to this month are many dogs and their pictures from time at the dog park.

Assistant Director of Recreation Rose Ann Reggiano said the program began in May and it really kicked off in August.

"We are hoping to promote the dog park and keep people looking at Facebook where we post all the upcoming dog-related events. Dog Of The Week has generated traffic and lots of comments," she said.

Dog nominations should be e-mailed to friendsofnewtownparkandbark@gmail.com with a description of the dog at the dog park. Dog of the week is posted by Park and Bark administrators. Participants must include a picture of their dog from the park, Ms Reggiano said.

The Newtown Parks & Recreation Department has started an effort through its Park and Bark Facebook page to celebrate local dogs while also communicating to their owners.
