Celebrating Health And Public Safety
(with photos)
BY JAN HOWARD
The annual Newtown Health & Public Safety Fair on September 18 at the Middle
School gymnasium has been described as one of the most successful.
"We were able to provide something for everyone," co-chairman Mae Schmidle
said Monday.
The event had the largest attendance ever, according to Mrs Schmidle.
The Health & Public Safety Fair featured demonstrations, such as how to
perform CPR, exhibits, attractions, and giveaways. Fire trucks, an ambulance,
and a police car in the front driveway of the school attracted adults and
children alike to sit behind the wheel or check out the equipment. The arrival
of a rescue helicopter was the highlight of the afternoon, landing in the rear
of the building by the soccer field. A scavenger hunt was offered for the
children.
Dr Della M. Schmid and Health Director Mark Cooper co-chaired the event with
Mrs Schmidle.
Health screenings included age/height/weight by the Newtown VNA, stress and
anxiety/depression by Family Counseling Center, blood pressure by Newtown
Ambulance and American Red Cross, body fat analysis and flexibility by Karen's
Fitness Studio, cholesterol by Newtown Health District, scoliosis/posture by
Colonial Chiropractic, skin cancer by Dr William Notaro, and vision/glaucoma
by Newtown Lions Club.
The organizational committee included representatives of American Red Cross,
Ashlar of Newtown, Business and Professional Women, Dr Schmid, and Newtown
Health District.
Sponsors included Aqua Environmental Lab; Big; Charles Ray, D.D.S.; Colonial
Chiropractic Centre; Democratic Town Committee; George's Pizza; Henry N.
Gellert, D.D.S.; Italian Pavilion; Kathleen M. Riley, N.D.; Newtown Health
