Some standouts can be seen at races in town again and again. The same can be said for 83-year-old Newtown resident Richard Kovacs, who has participated in the Run 4 Hunger & Health 5K each of the three years it has taken place, including this past weekend.

Kovacs walks the 5K course and said that he is generally the oldest to complete it. The race has a 70 and older category and there were five participants in this year’s event. Kovacs is hopeful of motivating more people close to his age to come out for the race in the future.

“I think it would be a good idea for them. If I didn’t do this I’d be stuck at the TV,” he said.

Kovacs walks two to three miles per day most days of the week.

“For 83 I’m very mobile. I have no physical problems yet,” he said. “I lost a lot of weight and I’m just making sure I keep it off.”

Southbury’s DeAnne Gauya trains Kovacs and walked the Run 4 Hunger & Health course with him. “He inspires a lot of people,” she said.

Kovacs is a volunteer for the FAITH Food Pantry, a beneficiary of the race, sponsored by the Knights Of Columbus, and has been a member of the Newtown Lions Club for about 30 years.
