ON THE ROAD WITH SHANNON HICKS

SARGENT SCAGNETTI is back at The Garage this weekend. The band will be at

Newtown's teen center on Church Hill Road for a concert Friday, August 13,

beginning at 7 pm. Admission is $7 per person. Please note the show is

restricted to teens who are at least high school age or above.

Also performing Friday night will be STEP LIVELY, 5 KNUCKLE SHUFFLE and

SPAZTIC HABITS.

The next concert in Beardsley Zoo's 5th Annual ZooFolk Summer Series is also

this weekend. On Saturday, August 14, the zoo will present a "Connecticut

Artist Showcase" and among the four musicians performing will be Newtown's own

GRADY McAULIFFE, the lead singer of the local band MIND TYDES. Grady will be

performing his own music in Bridgeport. Additional performers Saturday night

will be ANN-MARIE MENTA, RICHARD HULETT and KEVIN BRIODY.

The zoo is at 1875 Noble Avenue; telephone 394-6565. Tickets are $7 per

person, and showtime is 7 pm. Concerts are outdoors in the zoo's Picnic Grove,

or in the carousel building if there is rain. Picnic baskets are welcome, but

alcohol is not permitted on the zoo grounds.

Connecticut magazine will be back at the Oakdale in Wallingford next month

hosting a party with the best of everything Connecticut, including music of

course (why else would the party be mentioned here?). Winners from the

magazine's annual "Best of Connecticut" reader-selection poll will bring

samples of their winning products and services to the amphitheatre on

Thursday, September 16.

This year's winning musicians line-up looks an awful lot like last year's,

with EIGHT TO THE BAR, THE GALVANIZED JAZZ BAND and THE SONNY COSTANZO JAZZ

ORCHESTRA -- all winners in the 1998 Best Of contest -- slated to perform. The

evening will also include gourmet foods, beer, wine, pastries, chocolate

creations and representatives of Connecticut points of interest. Tickets for

the event are $35 in advance or $40 at the door, which in part benefits the

March of Dimes. The celebration will run from 6 to 9 pm. For tickets call the

CT chapter/March of Dimes at 800/446-9255.

Also at the Oakdale next month will be EARTH, WIND & FIRE, who is touring this

fall with AVERAGE WHITE BAND. Tickets for a September 9 show will be going on

sale Saturday, August 14, with prices ranging from $28.50 to $48.50.

The return of all things Eighties continues at Foxwoods, where ROBERT PALMER

now has a show scheduled for Saturday, September 11. Tickets for that concert

are available for $38.50 and $55, and Foxwoods tickets are available through

TicketMaster outlets or by calling the resort's box office directly at

800/200-2822.

Coincidentally, tickets for the BLONDIE concert at the same venue are also on

sale for the band's September 10 show, but I forgot to give to prices when

that date was first announced a few weeks ago. Blondie tickets are going for

$27.50 and $49.50 apiece.

The opening band for the rescheduled show by THE VERVE PIPE at Toad's Place,

August 25, has been changed. The Gravel Pit will now be opening.

Now that the Russians have closed down the Mir space station, I suppose the

only way anyone is going to be able to see this thing from now on will be by

visiting the IMAX Theatre at The Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk. Mission To Mir

is part of a double feature at the aquarium, weekends through October 17.

After that, Mir will really be gone for good. Until next week, I'll be seeing

you... on the road.

Questions and comments concerning "On The Road" (or anything music related)

should be sent to Shannon Hicks, c/o Bee Publishing Co., 5 Church Hill Road,

Newtown 06470, or shannon @thebee.com. Include a phone number for

confirmation, please . If you don't have a stamp or a piece of paper or a

writing utensil that works, give me a call! Phone number at the office is

426-3141. Shows listed on the calendar at club locations are for ages 21 and

over unless specified.
