Be Prepared, The Scarecrows

Will Return Again

The dates for this year’s “My Favorite Scarecrow Sculpture Contest” have been set, and reports from Newtown Middle School say the eighth grade students are once again preparing their creations.

Last year’s winner of the annual eighth grade student project was called, “Blue Fish, Blue Fish, What Do You Scare?” and was created by Hannah Fitzgerald and Jesse Sailer.

Each year eighth grade student groups are challenged to create a larger-than-life scarecrow, designed to frighten away a demon of their choice, that can withstand inclement weather. Each student group is limited to spending $25 on its scarecrow. The creations are then put on display on Newtown Middle School’s front lawn on Queen Street, voted on by the public for $1 per vote, and the top three winning scarecrow groups receive the profits to donate to a charity of their choice.

Last year’s contest raised a total of $1,056, with half the total credited to the winning entry and the balance split between the second and third place finishers.

This year the scarecrows will be set up on Saturday, October 22, with voting beginning that day and running through Saturday, October 29. This year again, ballots will be printed in the October 21 edition of The Newtown Bee and will be available both at Newtown Middle School and at The Bee’s 5 Church Hill Road building.
