To the editor:

My name is Charlie Gardner, and I am running for Newtown’s Legislative Council in District 1.

My wife, Kathy, and I are proud to call Newtown home and feel exceptionally fortunate to raise our three young sons here. We’ve witnessed firsthand how generous the people of this town are in assisting those in need, comforting those who experience loss, and dedicating their time through an array of volunteer organizations, community groups, and other entities to make Newtown such a wonderful place to live.

With that said, our town is facing many of the same challenges from statewide economic trends that are affecting all of Connecticut’s municipalities. Fortunately, Newtown has distinct advantages that can help us weather any difficulties that may lie ahead. In my discussions with my neighbors both in District 1 and elsewhere, there remains an attitude of optimism for the town and a wealth of ideas for improving it, whether that involves plans for Fairfield Hills, visions for new transportation options, or thoughts on smart, responsible development that increases our tax base and reduces the tax burden shouldered by residents.

If elected, I pledge to work for the best long-term interests of Newtown and will devote my time toward building on our strengths and making the town an even better place to live and work. Please visit my Facebook page (@CGforCouncil), where I share news and statistics on both town and state matters, including roads, schools, property taxes, and more. Your comments are encouraged! You can also reach me at charles.gardner@gmail.com.

Thank you, and I hope you will support me on November 5.
