To the Editor:

The League of Women Voters of Northern Fairfield County (LWVNFC) welcomes the invitation from the Friends of Newtown Seniors (FONS) and the Newtown Chamber of Commerce to be a co-sponsor for the upcoming Newtown Candidate Forum. This important election season event will take place on Tuesday, October 22, from 6:30 to 9 pm, in the Newtown Community Center. We hope that many Newtown voters will take the opportunity to come and hear the goals of the candidates.

The LWVNFC was chartered recently by the League of Women Voters of Connecticut because there were no LWV chapters in our area to fulfill the primary mission of the league: to have as many well-informed citizens voting on election day as possible. To this end, the league provides opportunities for voter registration and education about the candidates and issues on the ballot. Our chapter received a Youth Voter grant this year from the LWVUS. Under its auspices, we held registration events in area high schools, including Newtown High School, last spring. We will be continuing that successful youth registration program in 2020.

The LWVNFC hopes that this opportunity for a league chapter to become actively involved in the Newtown community will continue and flourish. We look forward to new opportunities for service in the areas of voter registration and education about important town issues. Information about the league will be available at the Candidate Forum.
