Local readers are just one week away from the inaugural Connecticut Book Festivals (CBF) Newtown Author Festival, and preparations are in full swing.

Forty Connecticut authors — including several from Newtown and Sandy Hook — will gather in The Great Room at Newtown Congregational Church, 14 West Street, on Saturday, October 17, between 10 am and 3 pm.

Many different genres will be featured, from children’s picture books, mysteries, and thrillers to poetry, science fiction, self help, coffee table favorites, and more.

Attendees will be offered the opportunity to meet the authors, chat about their books, and even buy some signed copies.

Admission to the book fair is free.

Additionally, CBF will be conducting a food drive during the author fair. Many CBF events include a collection to assist a local nonprofit and the Newtown fair will continue that tradition. Those planning to attend are asked to donate a nonperishable item. Newtown Author Fair organizers say the current wish list includes tuna fish, mayonnaise, canned ham, Spam, hearty canned soup, hash, chili, and stew.

This is the latest in a series of Author Events presented across the state by Connecticut Book Festivals, a volunteer organization committed to supporting its 700+ author members as they progress their writing journeys.

CBF’s goal is to provide members with exceptional opportunities to network, improve their writing skills, navigate the complex world of publishing, and promote their books to hopefully increase their sales. The group also helps those who dream of becoming published authors through its associate membership program.

For anyone interested in joining Connecticut Book Festivals, information is available at connecticutbookfestivals.com. Membership is free, as is participation at any CBF event.
